Why isn´t Lush 100% vegan? This conversation is from the Facebook page of Lush
user 1: Because honey is awesome. The owners of Lush aren't vegan though.
user 2: Well it´s quite hyprocrite all the love they seem to feel for other animals but they still use them and exploit them to make a profit.
user 1: I don't consider it that way. In all honesty, I think things like honey and wool are good to use and not hypocritical. Right now, honey bees are facing a huge problem that can certainly mean the end for them if something isn't done. Since humans use bees to get honey there has been a big interest in trying to find out what is wiping out bee hives. I don't think there would be a lot of interest in this if so many people didn't consume honey. You can get cruelty free lanolin as well. I don't think they are exploting animals in ways that are harmful to the animal.
user 3: I think wool is good to use. Please watch the video and become informed: http://www.peta.org/issues/animals-used-for-clothing/wool-industry.aspx
user 1: I do not like PETA.
user 4: It would be fantastic to see Lush 100% vegan - ALL animals are worth caring about!
user 3: This also gets the point across, PETA aside: http://www.veganpeace.com/animal_cruelty/wool.htm
user 2: Some important information regarding bees: http://www.vegetus.org/honey/honey.htm. And some information about wool: http://www.veganpeace.com/animal_cruelty/wool.htm. For the record, animals (human and non-human) are NOT things one can use, abuse and exploit. I know many people see other animals as mere commodities but that is just plain wrong. Exploiting is always cruel. Animals are not ours to use and enslave.
user 4: And as soon as someone wants to use any aspect of the animal, whether a part of them or the things they produce, the animal's welfare will *always* come second to profit. Sad but true.
user 1: I don't have a problem with using either one and yes I have read up on both bees and and wool from unbiased sources. It's a choice and if you don't like the fact that Lush uses animal products then either write to them or don't shop at Lush.
user 5: i love lush, but don't buy anything with honey in, ive wondered the same question.. bee's matter, too!
user 2: Of course they matter. "All sentient beings feel pain. If you are choosing to cause pain and to participate in exploitation and murder participating in pain and murder is always unethical. The ethical choice is vegan."
user 1: Harm is done to animals during harvest season of crops. Animals lose their habitat when humans build homes, buildings and use it for farming. Nothing is bloodless in this world. People should make the choice of what they choose to eat on their own without having a biased opinion shoved in their face.
user 6: It annoys me Lush uses animal derived ingredients yet is against the testing and exploitation of animals. Personally, I'm just happy to have somewhere I can get loads of vegan stuff. I would, however, shop there MUCH more if they removed ALL cruelty, and not just do what makes them look good (ie, campaigning against animal testing - something which the majority agree on).
...
Lush: @user 2 LUSH is a vegetarian company, with vegetarian beliefs and sensibilities. LUSH does however have lots of customers and staff who are vegan, so we ensure that plenty of our products meet their needs because we know that it can often be a struggle for them to easily find vegan beauty products.
user 2: @Lush, thanks for responding. What is stopping you to become a 100% vegan company? I know you can do it. Just to be clear about this, what are the vegetarians beliefs and sensibilities you talk about?
No more answers from Lush...
LUSH is a vegetarian company. Enough said.
Yes the majority of people agree that animal testing shouldn't happen. But it does happen. And that's why LUSH is actively fighting. Many countries have no laws whatsoever stopping companies testing on animals, some have laws that they /must/ test on animals (That's why LUSH isn't found in China). And even though the cosmetics industry is huge, many animals are dying, it is not a priority to the governments.
